This jewel in Bathís crown was once the Sydney Hotel, whose glittering society Jane Austen watched from her house opposite. It displays the treasures collected by Sir William Holburne: superb English and continental silver, porcelain, maiolica, glass and Renaissance bronzes. Since Sir Williamís time the collection has been greatly expanded and now includes landscapes by Guardi and Turner, and outstanding portraits by Stubbs, Ramsay, Raeburn, Zoffany and Bathís own artists Thomas Gainsborough, William Hoare and Barkers of Bath.
