The Roman Baths complex is the Jewel in modern Bath's tourism crown. Touted as the "best preserved Roman religious spa from the ancient world" the museum, exhibits and original sites are excellently presented and the tours are very good. Consistently in the top-ten most visited places in the UK, the Roman Baths are a must see for any visitors to Bath.

Some Roman Baths Facts:

  • The Romans built the first city here, around the sacred spring. They called it Aquae Sulis, the waters of Sulis, after the Celtic goddess of the spring.
  • Over the centuries the Roman Baths were forgotten until 1754, when the Duke of Kingston's workmen, digging out a new suite of baths, uncovered them. It was not until the 19th century that the extent of the baths was revealed.
  • The Great Bath, the focal point of the Roman Baths, is about 25 metres long and 11 metres wide. It is lined with lead, which was mined on the Mendip Hills by Roman slaves.
