Walk
down Gay Street from The Circus and you will find yourself
in the Northeast corner of Queen Square. Even though
it has become quite a busy thoroughfare it is still
a lovely example of John Wood's work and the central
"park" area is a great haven from the bustle
of the city.
Some Queen Square Facts:
- Queen
Square is the first major work by John Wood the Elder,
built between 1728 and 1735.
- The
queen to whom it refers is Caroline, wife of George
II.
- It
is not as Wood first intended; it was too expensive
to level the site, and the west side was not a terrace.
Instead there were what appeared to be three great
houses: two at each end and one set back in the middle.
The two end ones survive, but in 1830, when these
houses were just considered rather old-fashioned,
the central one was removed and the Greek Revival
block designed by Pinch the Younger replaced it
