Since
being closed to most traffic, Pulteney Bridge has started
to thrive even more than it had in the past. Its fine
south facing facade is one of Bath's marquee views (especially
when seen from North Parade Bridge, downriver) and the
less manicured north side also has a charm to it. There
is also a fine collection of shops and cafes along the
bridge itself which helps lend an air of uniqueness.
Some Pulteney Bridge Facts:
- Designed
by Robert Adam in 1768, work began a year later. It
is thought to be based on Andrea Palladio's plan for
the Rialto Bridge in Venice.
- The
first architect Pulteney turned to was Timothy Lightoler.
His estimate of the cost was £1000. The final cost,
however, was £11,500.
- Because
it is lined with shops, the bridge is sometimes compared
with the Ponte Vecchio in Florence.
