Often
compared unvarourably with the more illustrious Lansdown
and Royal Crescents, Camden Crescent actually commands
the more spectacular views. Its full width was never
achieved due to a landslide during construction, meaning
that the centre columns are actually considerably off
centre.
Some Camden Crescent Facts:
- Camden
Crescent was designed by John Eveleigh and work started
about 1788.
- Its
original name was Upper Camden Place and it was named
after Charles Pratt, Marquis of Camden.
- The
Camden family crest is an elephant's head, and there
is an elephant's head over each door. Clearly some
of the stonemasons had never seen such an animal.
Each one is different and they wear a variety of expressions
from mischievous to downright disapproving.
