Along
with the Roman Baths complex, Bath Abbey forms the heart
of Bath. Unpretentious and incredibly accessible, it
has been called "The Lantern of the West."
Things to watch out for are the angels climbing the
ladders either side of the West window and the fantastic
fan vaulted ceiling.
Some Bath Abbey Facts:
- The
first abbey on the site was founded in 676 when the
Abbess Bertana established a house of nuns.
- In
757 King Offa of Mercia replaced the nuns with the
brothers of Saint Peter. The abbey was described as
being of wonderful workmanship - mira fabrica. Almost
certainly they had used many of the carved stones
from the ruined roman city.
- The
first man to be crowned King of All England, Edgar,
was crowned in Bath in 973 AD. Officiating at the
ceremony were St. Dunstan, Archbishop of Canterbury,
and Oswald, Archbishop of York
